In 2022, I became a Digital Nomad and my first stop was Turkey.

In 2022, I took a leap that completely turned my life’s page: I let go of nearly everything I owned and stepped into the life of a digital nomad, with my heart set on exploring the world, starting with Turkey. This decision was less about seeking adventure and more about finding a deeper sense of freedom and connection, both with myself and the rich cultures around the globe. Armed with just the essentials and a soul full of curiosity, I embarked on this journey, eager to learn, grow, and embrace the beauty of simplicity in ways I never had before. Through this blog post, I’m excited to share with you the humble beginnings of my nomadic adventure—the lessons, the laughter, and the unexpected joys that come from living a life untethered. Welcome to my story of finding home wherever I roam.

What is a Digital Nomad?

When I decided to move to Europe, I didn’t know what a Digital Nomad was, and I didn’t consider myself one. But as I met more folks who (spurred on by the pandemic) decided to travel around the world and work remote, it felt slightly like my own life. Imagine having the liberty to choose your backdrop for work—be it a cozy café in a bustling city, a serene beach, or a quiet spot surrounded by mountains. For digital nomads, the world is both an office and a playground, offering endless opportunities to weave work with exploration, learning, and personal growth. It’s a way of life that celebrates flexibility, curiosity, and the joy of discovering new places and cultures, all while staying connected and productive. In embracing this lifestyle, we learn that our biggest asset is our ability to adapt and find community, creativity, and comfort, no matter where in the world we happen to be.

On a chilly January day, as I was driving back from holiday celebrations with friends in Richmond, a spontaneous decision led me through Columbus, to catch up with my dear friends Allie and Güven. Little did I know, this detour was about to steer my life in a direction I had always dreamed of but never fully imagined taking.

Growing up in a small rural town in Michigan, my childhood was woven with the values of simplicity, sustainability, and the magic of creating things by hand. Our meals came straight from the garden, and the local markets were treasure troves of homemade and artisanal delights. This upbringing nurtured in me a deep appreciation for travel, cultures, and the stories etched within the craft markets and alleyways of the world. Living in Italy during grad school and The Netherlands after undergrad only fueled this passion, embedding within me a longing to weave my life around exploring and celebrating the beauty of handmade culture globally.

Then came 2020, a year that felt like a long pause button on life as we knew it. The pandemic not only put a halt to my business but also left me standing at life's crossroads, pondering over what comes next. The loss of my Aunt to Covid and the crumbling of familiar structures around me were stark reminders of life's fleeting nature. It was during this time of reflection and search for meaning that Allie shared their plans of moving back to Turkey. Without a second thought, I knew I had to join them. Here was my chance to not just dream about a life of travel and cultural exploration but to live it.

Fast forward 54 days, and there I was, saying emotional goodbyes to my nephews in Chicago, my heart both heavy and exhilarated. As our plane ascended towards Istanbul, I couldn’t help but marvel at how life's unexpected moments can lead to the most transformative journeys. This move wasn’t just about fulfilling my wanderlust; it was a leap into living a life true to my roots and values, one where each day promises new learning, growth, and the joy of connecting with the world through its markets, crafts, and stories.

Join me as I share this adventure, not just as a tale of travel, but as a journey of rediscovery, resilience, and the beauty of starting anew. Here’s to embracing life’s detours, for sometimes, they lead us exactly where we’re meant to be.

Let’s get to know Bodrum:

Nestled on the turquoise coast of Turkey, Bodrum is a picturesque mosaic of ancient history and vibrant contemporary culture, a place where the past and present dance gracefully under the Mediterranean sun. This charming town, with its whitewashed houses adorned with bougainvillea, narrow cobblestone streets, and the tranquil azure sea, offers a serene backdrop to a life lived with intention and joy. Bodrum's rich tapestry weaves together the remnants of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, including the world-renowned Mausoleum, with modern marinas, bustling markets, and lively cafes, creating a unique blend of tranquility and excitement. The warm hospitality of its people, the exquisite local cuisine that's as much a feast for the soul as it is for the palate, and the rhythmic lull of the sea invite one to slow down and savor life's moments. Moving to Bodrum is not just a change of address; it's an immersion into a lifestyle that celebrates beauty, history, and the art of living well.

The view outside my front door was an entire sea.

Life here in Bodrum is kind of like back in Cleveland, just with a few extra perks: sunshine, the sea, and some seriously good eats. And, believe it or not, it's actually more affordable. After years of running myself ragged and avoiding the deep, healing work I knew I needed, moving here felt like I’d finally given myself the space to breathe and heal. I’m just really thankful to past me for taking that leap.

Living in Turkey is a whole different ball game compared to the US, and I’ve got plenty of stories to share about that. But one thing’s for sure, without this adventure, I wouldn’t have found the healing that led me out of my old life and into launching two new businesses. It’s been quite the journey, and I can’t wait to share more with you.
